I have burned many DVDs onto -R discs and have had no trouble playing them on my HP computer. Today i burned a TV show onto a +R disc and it won't play on my computer. Do HPs only play -R discs?

There's no actual difference between -R and +R. Most likely, you just got a bad burn of a disk (most common cause of that on modern gear is failing to make sure that 'burnfree' is enabled). Even a working burner will produce the occasional "coaster" disk.
