The best, rated how? The fastest supercomputer? The best laptop? The best enterprise-scale or midrange database machine? Or some other class of computer?

And even in a given segment, "the best" is a fuzzy definition. A few years ago, I helped build a supercomputer. It ended up being only #3 on the "fastest" scale, but it set a new record for price-performance (costing less than half of the previous #3 machine).

This isn't specific to the computer world either - what's "the best" car? All depends on what you want. A Maserati has great performance, but it sucks for luggage space and can't carry a Little League softball team. My Camry won't beat many cars off the starting line, but it's a good choice if you have 11 hours of driving ahead of you....
