The Diesel fuel is higher now because the refineries are making the winter grade low sulfur fuel and emptying out the tanks of high sulfur fuel which is causing a shortage. Also it is harvest time in some parts of the country so farmers are using more diesel fuel. There is also a drought in some parts of the country and it takes a lot of diesel fuel to operate the irrigation systems.Distributers need to go further distances to get available fuel.

the thing that has always been told to me..is that diesel is mostly used by industry (either construction, mining or truck transportation) . and when the economy is growing, diesel has a large demand on it.
in general, you don't really want to see diesel prices to drop, because that's a good indication of a slowing economy, which hurts everyone.
now, diesel does fluctuate...it's higher than regular gas someplaces, and lower in others.

Why doesn't the gas prices go down since it's now enriched with ethanol? Ethanol is supposed to be cheaper because it burns much quicker than conventional gas. Now I really feel like I am getting ripped off. I am overpaying and it's burning twice as quick making $3 a gallon more like $6 a gallon with ethanol. yikes!
PS. We have the ability to build more gas refineries, but won't.

Supply and demand. Some years ago, nobody drove a diesel. Now, everyone thinks it's "cool" to have a huge pickup with a diesel in it, even if it's just to go shopping. It was inevitable that the price increased and, by showing you would pay the inflated price for the vehicle, they knew they had you by the short 'n curlies...hence your situation now.

My understanding is that there is a "War" Tax on diesel. Also, the reformulation of diesel to comply with emission standards for large trucks increases the cost of production.

Anytime you want to know why something that seems low cost to make is expensive, the answer is "because they can".
People charge the most they think they can get, which has nothing to do with their costs.
