Broadband is better, it's faster, prolly the same price. As far as security goes, that has to do with your computer, never your internet.

As far as security goes, it's a wash. The average DSL modem and average cablemodem are almost identical on the firewall and NAT functions they provide - it ends up being a question of how it's configured. And then of course, there's the firewall/antivirus/etc on your personal computer.
Boradband will on the average be faster, but cost more. DSL is usually cheaper, but not as fast. Locally, 6Mbit/sec broadband is going for about $60/mo - but I'm actually on a 768/128 DSL line here, because that's only $15/mo and quite enough capacity for what I do - if I *really* need more bandwidth, there's gigabit at the office. (and that's gigabit all the way to the internet, not a gigabit network connected to the rest of the world through a slower link)...

DSL /is/ broadband.
broadband is just a way of modulating and demodulating electrical signles (analog versus digital)
look on google.com and wikipedia.org for more information.
