The baby may or may not "be hungry". The child draws nutrients from the mother, but it doesn't "eat" like the mother does. The hunger twang the mother feels is a stomach spasm, the child doesn't necessarily have that, but if the mother has not nourished herself in a few days, the child will suffer from it.

No. Seems pregnant women can feel hungry even when they are not nutritionally lacking anything. It is called HORMONES. I know, because Mac and Cheese is nutritionally nothing, and yet I was always hungry for it when pregnant.
