In a Graduate Level Course what is the lowest letter grade you can recieve that is still passing? I've heard that C is failing, but I've also heard that D is passing as long as you have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, but that class may not transfer over to other schools you might attend in the future. Does this vary from school to school or state to state? Does anyone know the REAL answer to this??????? Thanks!!!

A "D" grade is considered passing. Generally speaking most requirements for a Graduate degree state the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA. So if you get a lot of "D's" you're going to have a hard time keeping that 3.0 GPA. Unless a particular school or program requires a 3.0 (B) for EVERY CLASS TAKEN (and I've never heard or seen this), you can get away with a few D's and C's provided you get enough A's to bring your overall GPA up to the 3.0. I have seen some particular programs (such as nursing) that require a minimum grade on a *SPECIFIC* class regardless of overall GPA. In order to get in the nursing program in some schools you have to get a letter grade of "B" or better in Microbiology, etc. Those requirements are usually spelled out very specifically.

In my graduate school a D passed and you didn't have to retake the course, but yes, a C was considered failing since only 5-10% of students were given a C or lower. But if you had the 3.0 GPA then you wouldn't be on probation. If you fell below a 3 point then you had one semester to get it back up. Whether or not it carries to other schools/programs varies by school.

This answer may not be very satisfactory, but I suspect that it depends on your particular school and passing for what purposes.

That is, a D may be officially a pass, but it may not be good enough to get you in an upper level course that is essential in your program.

Alternatively, sometimes people say that a C in grad school is like failing a class. The reason is that in some programs they are rarely given out and there is an underlying understanding that it reflects very poor work. So although it may be a pass regarding the registrar's office, it may mean that no professor will want to work with that student (say, regarding independent research) so it can be quite detrimental.

You may want to ask people affiliated with your particular program as it can be so specific to the situation.

I believe that a C is a passing grade in most Graduate schools. However, most graduate programs also require you to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. You can be sure by checking your school's graduate student catalog for information regarding grades.

Where I went to graduate school, a minimum passing grade was a B. You didn't earn your credits at all, if you didn't get at least a B. You have to remember that when you get your graduate degree, that university sends you out into the world representing them. They want to make sure they can be proud of the students they graduate.

The grade of C is the lowest passing grade which is considered minimally acceptable at the graduate level.

However, ever school varies. I would suggest that you contact your campus counselor for passing grade level at your school.

You need at least a B average to continue and if you are hoping to go for a PH.D, you need a A average. Most universities will transfer courses according to the transcript you provide. Each one has their own system; try making an appointment with the academic advisor; they may be able to help you.

Good luck!

It depends on the requirements of your university. Most universities require a 2.0 for passing. But to transfer to another university or get into an advanced degree program (PhD) it might be higher.

A grade of 3.0 is a B, or 73%-76%. That's a pretty good mark.

It varies from program (major), class, school, etc. Certain majors require a B to pass and get credit.
