Two movies come to mind for the same location: Roxanne and Housekeeping were both set in Nelson, British Columbia. Beautiful town, and both used the setting well.
St. Elmo's Fire is my favorite movie set in D.C. (my favorite city). It takes the time to treat the location as a living thing instead of just a backdrop for political intrigue, as most movies set there do. It also uses the campus of Georgetown, which is the most beautiful campus in the world.
The Russia House was one of the first movies to be allowed to film in Russia and truly used the opportunity to show people something they had never seen.
L'Auberge Espanol. Set in Barcelona. Made me want to go.

I don't really have a favorite place anymore, but I do live in South Dakota. That will do. There are several movies filmed out here. Everyone always thinks "Dances With Wolves". There's a new movie coming out called "Imprint" that features Native Americans supposedly from South Dakota, only they aren't portrayed as wise Shamen or drunk never-do-wells, just "normal" people who happen to be Lakota. South Dakota is a mess. It's two worlds, whites and Indians not exactly co-existing, but living among each other. I'm not sure if any movie can really capture the flavor here. I don't know if Custer was an arrogant fool or a war hero. Some people call Mount Rushmore "The Four Thieves". Did you know that? The top 5 movies have yet to be made about South Dakota. Directors and writers are too busy showing off or basking in their own cinematic obsessions.
There are many stories to be told here, many characters you won't find anywhere else. 30,000 bikers will be rumbling through Sturgis next week, I sure someone could do five top movies about that as long as they leave their ego out of it.

Hawaii ..James Michners book about the first missionaries to the Islands. Great film.
Out of Africa. Gorgeous panoramic views..breathtaking'
Lawrence Of Arabia, Spectacular
The World Of Susie Wong. All the flavor of Hong Kong 30-40 years ago, Real people and how they lived.
Mutiny On The Bounty, the one made with Marlon Brando, the islands were like jewels and the people so beautiful, who wouldn't want to visit Tahiti.
The Quiet Man, filmed in Ireland is gorgeous film, the country side is as green and enchanting as anyone could want. We watch it every few years when it pops up on Saturday afternoons.
Several others come to mind, I can remember the scenery but don't know where they were filmed. Thats 5 anyway.

Woodstock Il. Has a small square downtown.
Ground Hog Day was filmed here. Real small town look to the movie.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles had a couple scenes from Woodstock and the surrounding rural highways.
TV show Prison Break filmed on the square last year.
Jimi Hendrix played the star spangle banner here. (kidding)
