that's "sharecropping". it's an agreement after the civil war. Former slaves entered into the agreement voluntarily, or out of necessity. Sharecropping is usually that ex-slaves are allowed to work the land of a former slaveowner, and in return received a part, or "share" of the harvest for themselves..

It actually is share cropping. It can be many things but usually is about a farmer who allows another person to raise a crop on his land. Tobacco was the biggest share crop in my area. The person raising the crop and the land owner would split profits on the crop by agreement made between the two persons. That agreement allowed a person who had no land to be able to raise the tobacco on someone's farm, and both people profited on a good crop year.

Cropsharing is when a farmer and land owner share the product produced from the land. Meaning if a farmer grew corn on someone elses land they would split the corn. The share of corn would be payment to the landowner for allowing the farmer to use the land.

Sort of an offshoot of indentured servitude. here in the US, after the Civil War, Southern landowners were required to give a portion of their land to their former slaves so that the freedmen (ex-slaves) could work their own crops and start earning their own living. They had to pay back the landowners for the land by giving a portion of their crop yield to the landowners.

If you were to poor to rent the land, you'd share your crops with the landlord. Slaves didn't have this option since they were forced to work the land without pay.
