I have danced for 2 different pro sports teams, and was an assistant captain on each. Here is some of what we looked for:
1. The look has to be right. You must be in great physical shape, and long hair is preferred over short hair. Make-up should be glamorous, and make sure it's all water-proof; you will sweat at auditions.
2. Visit the squad's website to get an idea of what they are looking for, tryout requirements, and tryout prep classes or clinics offered.
3. Work on your high kicks and splits, as well as axle turns, toe touches, and jazz walks.
4. Work on your interview skills.

normally you try out. the had auditions recenty here in oklahoma city for the honeybees - the dance team for our professional basketball team. usually to get there you were on your dance team in college which is also audition and usually to get there you did it in high school, and probably took dance at a studio for several years during your school years.
Anyway, it's by audition.

Enroll at a dance school with a dance company. Maybe spend a year or 2 then audition if they need dancers. Hope I helped you.
