All the way until I went into labor I was only a cm dialated. I was ecstatic when I went into the hospital in labor and was 3cm dialated (I stayed at home in labor for a short time, and I could have been in light labor while I was asleep, as contractions woke me up). I just knew I was in labor because the contractions were only about 10min apart and kept getting closer together (by seconds, but it was enough). I'd had two incidences of false labor before then. I didn't go to the hospital for them, but the contractions stopped after an hour or two and were managable, so it was pretty obviously false labor.
This pregnancy I had once incident of false labor (preterm), but my contractions were steady at 2 minutes apart and pretty intense. If it hadn't been so early in pregnancy (like, 26 weeks) I probably would have stayed at home until they got more painful. While in the hospital they got really intense (so much I got nauseous). But they said that since my cervix wasn't changing, it wasn't real labor. They gave me a shot to stop the contractions and sent me home.

Usually you can tell you are in labor when 1. your water breaks. Although some doctors dont consider that labor. Or 2. you start having regular, increasing contractions that do not stop when you get up to walk or change postions. When your contractions are 5 minutes apart or your water breaks, you go to the hospital. The cm dialated only tells you how ready your cervex is, not how far you are or have come.

I was 2 cm dilated. I did not think I was in labor until I got halfway home from work. The pain was a never ending pain unlike contractions were expected to be. By the time I got to the hospital I could hardly walk. It got easier when my water broke then it was smooth sailing. I was also told I would forget the pain. Wrong. I'll never forget.
If you're about to experience it, I hope all goes well for you, and the baby is healthy.

Zero the first one, and I was in labor 42 hours with regular contractions from the get-go, and she was a week overdue. My water didn't break until about 36 hours into it. With my second, I was at 3 cm for three weeks, 4 for a week, and I went into labor right on the due-date with strong, regular contractions. That one only lasted 10 hours, and the doc broke my water at the hospital.

I believe you are supposed to dialate 10cms. I was 8 cms dialated when I went for my doctors visit. He told me that the last time he saw something like this, the lady delivered right in his office! I had all 4 of my kids quick though, but, I do believe its 10 cm. When I had my kids I went straight into hard labour....none of this 5 minutes apart stuff. I had silent contractions with my first (I couldn't feel them, so, they had to put some sort of belt around my tummy), then I went into hard labour. The second, my water broke at home, I went into hard labour, and I nearly didn't make the hospital. So, I got the the 3rd and 4th induced and went straight into hard labour again. My longest labour was 1 hour and 22 minutes. Good luck!

Well, I've got 4 kids, and they were all different. With my first, 4cm, and I thought I was going to die!! My second, 7cm, and I was o.k. took my time going to the doctors and everything was fine. My 3rd, he was late and I went to be induced and started having labor pains that morning so I was about 4cm when I went in. My 4th, again I was late and I went into labor the night before I was to be induced and when I was checked I was 6cm. It all has to do with your individual body. They all started with that pain in your lower abdominals, and lots of back pain, no reason back pain. I also lost my mucus plug, and had a tinny bit of blood spotting, very tiny, nothing serious. Then comes the pain that makes you get very still, and you know that it's time. From there on, you don't have to guess. If you took lamaze go for it! It did wonders for me that's what made it easier on me, do the breathing!! God bless and keep you safe during your delivery, you and the baby!

as soon as your cervix starts staedily dialating you are in labor, at 10 cm you go into the delivery or "pushing" portion of the birthing process.
my water broke, but I hadnt gone to the bathroom in a couple hours (at the time i was going like every 45 min.) i felt a hard kick so i thought the baby kicked my full bladder and i peed a bit. when i stood up it stoppped, so i thought i was okay. i had been having contractions for weeks, but when they were every 8 minutes i called my doc. then they were every 2 min. by the time i got to the hospital i was 7 cm...4 hrs later i had my son as it turns out when i stood up the baby's head acted as a cork and the water came out when i laid down

I was induced with my son but my daugter I was dialated to 3 and the doctors had to break my water with both of my children and with my son the doctor had an intern breaking my water and it hurt then he took over and broke my water and it was so tough that he even had a hard time breaking it. With my daughter it was tough but my doctor didn't have such a hard time or maybe he knew what he was doing a little better. But both were wonderful experiences!! I don't know where I would be with out them.
