Originally, Ivy League referred to a set of schools that competed against each other in sports (they still do). By now the term is used mostly to refer to the high quality of education in these schools.
The reason these schools formed their own sports league is because they all have very high academic standards and so it would not be reasonable for them to compete with schools where academics are taken considerably less seriously. For example, Ivy League schools do not give sports scholarships, which means that some of their athletes who are on financial aid may have to be working. That is very different from athletes in other leagues who get a full ride and can focus all of their time on athletic training.

I went to Brown, so I can tell you that the Ivy League schools are Brown, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Penn (University of Pennsulvania), Columbia and Cornell. They are so called because of the ivy that covers the buildings on their campuses. Ivy League schools are considered by many to be the best universities in the country academically, and consequently are some of the most expensive.
Good luck to your daughter...the competition will be rigorous!
