The car engine is mostly 4 stroke.
It has a cylinder, piston and
spark plug in case of petrol engines.
spark plug is absent in case of diesel engines. it has valve for diesel input.
Petrol Engine: A mixture of petrol and air is filled in the cylinder, the piston comprises the mixture to a certain level n then the Spark plug generates a spark burning the mixture and moving the piston down.
Diesel Engine: Only air is filled in the cylinder, the piston compresses the air and generates very high temperature. At this time diesel is put in the cylinder which burns bcoz of high temperature. and it moves the piston down.
As there are four steps in the above mechanisms it is called as four stroke engine!
was this what u were looking for?

The things we don't see : There is a brain of thousands of engineers, hard work of millions workmen, bread & butter of billion family members of persons related to industry.
The things we see : An engine consisting of Engine Head, pistons, valves, Fuel pump, Radiator, Cam shaft and a lots of other related parts.

That's a BIG question. There is lots of stuff in there. Maybe you should break the question down into smaller sections of the engine. Also, different cars have different parts.

you have several parts
but the main ones are
crankshaft
camshaft
pistons
piston rods
timing chain
lifters
pushrods
valves
the camshaft operates the valves ,the crankshaft turns the pistons in the block, all of this has to be timed in order for it to run
