For example, what would be the women's equivalent jean size of a men's size 34 (waist) pair of jeans?

Depends on your hips and what brand. Are you wearing a 34 for a 34" waist, or just so they fit over your hips, since guys don't have hips and their jeans will be a straight cut. If your waist is a 34", you are probably a 14, 16, or 18 depending on the maker. If your hips are 34", then you are probably a 2, 4, or 6 depending on the maker. If you are neither, and have a smaller waist and larger hips but buy the 34 to fit, then are somewhere in between.
Large size gap isn't it? You can either go to the store and get measured, and find your size, or just start trying jeans on until you find ones that fit.

With all the different cuts in women's jeans, you really have to try them on. If you wear a size 10 in women's, try a size 30 in mens and work from there.

around 14 or 16 but the easy way to figure it out is to simply measure your waist
