I wanted to give our neighbor (whose husband passed away five months ago) a tree to plant in memorial of him. I was thinking of maybe something that bloomed around the February, March, or April time period, or maybe an evergreen after reading an earlier question regarding the significance of an evergreen tree. I did like the idea of decorating the grown tree for Christmas. The husband and wife are originally from ElSalvador, and that's where he both died and is buried. We live in Maryland, so we definitely get winter with significant snowfall here, so I would need something that is not tropical. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

The Eastern Red Bud. The way the tree is uliminated by purple bud is an eye catcher and I think would symbolize there is life after death (winter and spring) Very rich looking tree and one of the first to blossom in the spring.

How about an Eastern Red Cedar? It's an evergreen with a beautiful, conical shape and grows rapidly to a height of 30' to 60'. It'll grow in most soils as long as it isn't planted in shade. I think you AND your widowed neighbor would be pleased.

My favorit would be there red bud its a beautiful tree it dose grow slow but they are really cool in the spring because they are coverd in red buds that do trun into flowers. Look in to that and see if it can grow there. try some fruit tress weeping cherry trees are really cool to so try that and most importantly look and see if they canstand the winter.

I think I would plant one that matched his attributes. And as long is it will grow in your area too. Also, where I am from, we put small markers in front of the tree with the person's name on it. And a small message if needed. They resemble headstones or gravemarkers but are about 8"x5"x4".

Nice thought. I would 1. ask the widow , barring that plant what you like...the memorial is for the living after all.
