20 mins ice and 20 mins heat compression. To avoid this in the future, take 10 to 15 mins to stretch properly. There is a right way and a wrong way to stretch. Most gyms have a chart showing both. If the stretch feels wrong, it probably is. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds (counting down from 20 works well for me). Don't feel embarassed to ask a staff member for assistance on stretching. Stretch before, during and after yourworkout. Also, 15 mins on a treadmill before weight training really helps keep you loose.

After your training session, drink a high protein shake or eat a tuna sandwich. Your muscles need protein and amino acids to recoup.

ok, what kind of swollen muscle are we talking about here? from a bug bite or from trauma like hitting yourself against something or from excessive exercise? if its the last one, first of all you have to be sure that u didnt fracture a bone it is just a sprain... to do that u have to have an xray.... regarding that question at any rate, u can do a hot compress to reduce swelling. u use a soft absorbent cloth folded into several layers dipped in hot water of about 107-114F or 41-46C temp.

First 24 hours ice (like if it's fresh and just happened)
2nd 24 hours heat (after it's been hurting awhile)

and, then get the nicest massage. Massages are wonderful as are spas!

Usually you ice the area (15 minutes on, 30 minutes off) untill swelling is down... and elevate the swollen area... like if its ur ankle ... lay down and elevate ur leg so that it's like higher than your heart... i believe thats how it goes... something like that... :) if it worsens go see a doctor.

Alternate between hot and cold, put on moist heat for 20min. then put on cold for 20min. and keep on doing that for a hr. or two. It confuses the muscle, and relaxes it.

i'm an RN and this is best, get into and very hot hot bath and put rubbing cream like icy hot on your muscles and lay down and let all this stuff work for you.
turn off the lights and light a candle and just close out the world and just soke for st lest 20 mins or more untill the cream has had time to set into your muscles.
try this and let me know how it is doing and if this helped you.
