Debit is money you already have. Debit cards are also called Check Guarantee Cards because they are linked to your checking. The card has a preset limit. For example if you have $1000 dollars in your checking account every time you use the debit it will deduct from that amount. When you spend all of that money rather than bouncing checks the debit "line of credit" kicks in and will pay the amount up to your limit.

If your ATM card has a VISA logo, yes, it's a VISA Check Card. If it had a MasterCard logo, it would be called a MasterMoney card. Same thing, different brand. A VISA Check Card is accepted almost anywhere that accepts VISA credit cards, but the money comes out of your checking account instead of racking up debt.

Some places will not accept VISA Check Cards, specifically car rental companies and hotels. For some reason, they feel if they have to charge additional fees, they stand a better chance to collect if it's a credit card. For standard daily purchases, like groceries and DVD's, the VISA Check Card will work just fine.

A debit card is a card which physically resembles a credit card, and, like a credit card, is used as an alternative to cash when making purchases. However, when purchases are made with a debit card, the funds are withdrawn directly from the purchaser's current/checking or savings account at a bank or credit union.
