Hmmm... sounds like a bad battery or motherboard. A battery is cheap ($3), try that. Take your battery to walmart, target, etc... and get a match.
Look at the motherboard. Look at all the capacitors on the board. A capacitor is a can shaped component of different sizes. There are about 20-30 of them on each motherboard. They should all look the same on their tops. The tops should be flat and clean. If the tops are domed and have gunk on them they are failing. (swollen or leaking capacitors) This causes all kinds of problems with computers and will require a new motherboard. This is the most common problem we have here at work. It may be something to check.

Exact same thing happened to me.
Had to buy a new computer eventually because it quite often failed to start even after taking the battery out and in again.First I downloaded all my files on a flashstick and then transferred them to the new laptop.

when you can get a slightly used computer with those specs or better for under $200, why mess around with anything less than perfection? Why risk your data on a faulty machine?

Have you replaced the battery? I know that sounds like a really dumb question - but we all go DOH once in a while.
