I guess it depends on the exchange program, but usually the school organizes a lot of stuff, such as trips, Japanese-style parties that give you the opportunity to make Japanese friends and learn/practice the language.

It might be tiring for a foreigner sometimes (language, different perception of human relations), but try and mix around with the Japanese as much as possible, it's the best way to get a good idea about this/any country. I mean, if it's the sort of program that brings together people from 15 more countries, try and don't spend all your time around foreigners.

Visit some temples (Kyoto is great for this), go and see the sumo tournament, definetely try and go to festivals (matsuri, especially in summer, they also have plenty of fireworks during this period of the year), go clubbing in Roppongi or Shibuya if you'll stay in Tokyo, try bathing in an onsen, try as much food as you can, it would be also great if you could visit a Japanese family's house. If you are coming in spring don't miss the picnics under the cherry trees and in autumn don't miss the momiji (maple leaves).

As long as you keep an open mind, I am sure you are going to have a great time. Enjoy!
