There are three factors that determine a star's life cycle.

1. Location
2. Location
3. Location

The star's location determines what it is made of and how much it is made of and its interaction with nearby stars. Mass, Chemistry, Stellar Interactions.

Given a single star, only its mass will determine its life cycle. Given a group of stars, they can interact and disturb each other's life cycles. Close proximity can create neighbors where one is consuming the other.

in addition to the mass, which determines how long and bright it will burn, the fact of whether its a first generation star or 2nd gen star also determines its life cycle sequence. first gen stars are formed from the primordial soup of the early universe while 2nd gen stars arise from remnants of these dead first stars.
first gen stars burn longer due to their high hydrogen content.

if a star is part of a multiple star system, then its neighbors may well affect the life cycle of that star ( esp its end ! )

Its mass. The bigger the star, the brighter and faster it burns. A type O star will burn out and go supernova in a few 100 million years. A type G star like our sun can burn for 10 billion years.
