The highest city by elevation is Leadville, Colorado, surprisingly! The temperature change is really due to the geographic change, going from the Pines to the desert, with a quick drop in elevation descending from Flagstaff to Phoenix. Flagstaff has four seasons with snow; Phoenix is hot all year round!

Well, living in Arizona, I can tell you a few things. For one, the culture is average American. We work every day, except weekends (Most of us). In Phoenix there are good and bad neighborhoods. The good neighborhoods would be Anthem, Scottsdale, Mesa, and pretty much anywhere east of Phoenix. South Phoenix is quite a bad area with street gangs and drug trafficking. Downtown is really nice, with burger joints, corporate headquarters, and historic housing. There is some crime to watch out for there too though. Also, neighborhoods to avoid would be Maryvale, Downtown Glendale, Some of Tempe, and South Phoenix. Anywhere near 10th street and Indian School rd. Good Colleges? Glendale Community College, Grand Canyon University, University of Phoenix, Western International University, and Mesa Community College. There are other Community colleges like Scottsdale Community College, and Tempe. Special holidays? February 14 is Arizona's birthday. It was established in 1912. Fun places to visit? Fountain Hills, with the tallest fountain in the United States there spouting every day. I think at about 5:00 (???). Every Christmas we have Glendale Glitters, with thousands and thousands of lights there. You'd have a blast in downtown Phoenix. Jan Brewer is the governor. We also have a Mexican border problem, I'm sure you've heard. It gets really hot here, in March through mid- October ranging from 100-120 degrees during the day. Public school have to have heat advisories. At night it can be a low of 85, during the summer. Now winter is a whole another story! In Late November through February we get temperatures during the day from 60-85 degrees. At night it can go from 25-50 degrees. I hope this answered your question ;) BTW we are the 5th largest city, not 6th

60 degree difference between two cities 5 hours apart with such an elevation difference, woop'd doo. I grew up in Dallas where i have gone to school in the morning when it was 80 wearing shorts and come out after school and it was snowing and i guess in the 20's. One city, closer to Vegas' elevation. By the way, I love Vegas.

Denver Colorado. Flagstaff is in the foot hills, so of course the ambient temperature is lower than in the desert, like Las Vegas.

I doubt that is the highest elevation by a long ways. It is around 7-8K ft. I was in the ghost town of Tomboy, Colorado and it was over 12K feet. Welcome to the west. Part of the reason for the big temperature swings is the lack of humidity. The lowest point in the continental US is Death Valley (below sea level) which is only a few miles from the highest point Mt. Whitney over 14K feet. The 60 degree swing you saw is typical for the area.

what your experience was just showed you something about the desert. the highest city in the US is Denver, at a little over a mile high (Mile High Stadium) but the desert cools very quickly, and more completely than regular forested regions because then sand loses its stored heat so much quicker... one reason for this is the trees, grass and such. they all work to hold the heat in the soil, where a desert doesnt have many of the former to help keep the heat down on the ground

Flagstaff is a mile high....But I think that Denver Colorado might be a bit higher, I just looked at this actually because we are considering moving there, as we live in Phoenix, and its hot as heck down here, and its like 5400 feet above sea level...or something like that...
