Believe it or not, Barbie originally was a real person. Her mother watched her and her girlfriends play with adult female dolls more than they did the baby dolls. Barbara Handler is the womans name. It was her Mom Ruth, who came up with idea for a more realistic adult doll and went to work as a co-founder of Mattell in the late 1950's.
