Just as no two people are alike, no two labor and deliveries are alike. You just can't put an "average" on this issue. Each pregnancy is different, even when the same woman has a second baby. You'll just have to wait and see. My advice is to get a good book on pregnancy. Knowing what is going to happen beforehand in labor and delivery will take the fear and mystery out of it for you.
Personally, my labor was 30 hours and ended in a c-section. My contractions were strong (on labor inducing drugs) and the monitor needle went all the way over every two minutes for hours! How did it feel? Like menstural cramps. I have a high tolerance for pain. I only submitted to the c-section because they said the baby was probably in distress.
In the end, no matter how long, or hard the labor if you are looking forward to this baby it will be worth it. I'll quote, I believe, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, "Birthing is hard, and dying is mean, so get you some loving in between!"
Good Luck. And remember, it it was THAT awful we'd all be only children!

There is no such thing as "average" in the realm of natural birth. Like all women are different, all births are different. You need to talk to your OBGYN about how long they'll "allow" you to labor after your water breaks, or once you begin labor. Yes, 15 hours seems long, but in the scheme of things it really isn't. I would suggest you find a childbirth educator (NOT from the hospital!) I strongly suggest Birthing From Within or Bradley. Hire a doula!!!! Be active in labor, don't just lay there waiting for things to change, make it happen. Walk the halls, rock in a chair, sit on a birthing (big exercise) ball and roll your hips around--- BELLY DANCE! =) That's what belly dance was originally, a ritual to help women prepare for birth.
And Congratulations for wanting to go natural! If both you and the baby are healthy, let's keep it that way, and not have your little one introduced to meds. before s/he needs them (in utero!). BTW, I did have 3 natural births, and I help other moms (I'm a doula) but am not a "natural birth nazi", I have been there for some of my ladies as they've had epidurals, and was even able to be with one as she had an emergency Cesarean birth. It's been wonderful... Get yourself educated, the more you know, the less stressed and the less frightened you will be!

Everyone is different. Also, the first birth is usually the longest. Labor averages 20 hours for a first baby. Good luck with your pregnancy!
Mine took 25, but that included 4 hours of pushing.

The average length for a first time mother is 12-18 hours. Some mothers are in labor longer, some less. It is not unusual for a mother with back labor to be in labor for up to 48 hours.
My mom's labor with me was 36 hours (she had back labor) and my labor with my daughter was only 11 hours. I have no sisters to compare labor to.
Many women have labors much like their sister's and not so much like their mother's. It is very possible you could have a similar labor. 15 hours is not so bad at all. Good luck and happy birthing.

My daughter (first) was 13 1/2 hours, doctors say it might have been faster if when I was breathing I wasn't pushing before I was supposed to. My son was like 7 hours. I've known women whose water has broke and within 2 hours they have had their baby. It all really depends on your sister and the baby...if the baby is bigger then pushing will be more difficult.

My first took 7 1/2 hours, and my second was 3 1/2. My labor was induced. So, if you get enough responses and people tell how long it was for them-- you'll get an idea.
