reason is an explanation of how something came about. An excuse is why someone shouldn't be mad at you. For example. I'm late for work because I was out drinking last night and overslept. Most bosses might accept that as a reason, not many will accept that as an excuse.

An excuse is an explanation offered to justify or obtain forgiveness.

no they are not.

The reason it is so hot is that we are under a new pressure system. (you cannot use the word "excuse".)

His excuse was he didn't have sufficient funds. (the word 'reason' does not make sense in this use.)

no. Reason is sth that you have an explanation for while excuse is sth you say in order not to get blamed
