Yes, you can! Programs like SmartUndelete should do the job.

When you replace a file, only the pointer to the data in the file index is removed. The actual data on the disk is not removed. Thus, special programs can still recover this data.

You don't mention what type of file this is. If you just did it you can use restore to an earlier time and get it back that way. Typically, if you used Word and were typing a document and you saved it over the original, you lose the orginal... some programs will allow you to bring it back - Norton may have something if you're using protection trash basket.

honestly it will be very difficult too. If the file was ever emailed the original may be in your send or inbox. check the trashcan. do a searcon your pc for similar file names. Maybe you will get lucky and find a temp file that is similar.
Press f3
type *.doc for word (or use the same last 3 letters)
sort by date and look through the files

Hello,
A good data recovery software I used is Wondershare data recovery. Recommended. Download here http://j.mp/1qaIRid
It's a good free solution.
I hope it helps

Once you place another file with same name on a deleted file's location, its not possible to recover.

Try Bryanchan's suggestion. I think, it might work.
