I think that certain movies [i.e The Notebook] have a storyline/dialogue that speaks to people and then they remember a time or moment when they felt some of the same emotions.
For me; I usually cry at sad things when they dont SAY it but you KNOW what the visual scene is meant to explain.
A picture is worth a thousand words you know?

That's the beauty of movies. They are a meant to take you far away from your reality for a little while. This is the reason you go to a movie, or sit down in from of your screen at home. To be transported away to another reality and escape the munndane boredom of your present moments for a while.
Of course in order for any movie to be successful the quality of production certainly plays a big role. Not that all of these "big productions" are always a success, but it helps to have a powerful performance by the actor, or great direction, or the scenery, the story, etc.
Most of us get swept away by the movies that illustrate the struggle between good and the evil, especially when the good guys win at the end. They play on this human sentiment and capture your heart. You can not help but come out of the movie feeling good about yourself. I still cry at the end of "Its a wonderful life" at each Christmas. God, they play it so many times, don't they?
ET is one example of this "emotions sweeping" you away to another world. It brings out the child in you because as a child you always believed that the good guys will win in the end.
There are movies that leave you sad but glad that you live in a better world than the characters in the movie. I felt that way when I watched Gandhi, Hotel Rwanda, Midnight Express, The Perfect storm.
And then there are comedies. Aren't they just so funny? You can ease yourself away from your bored day for a while and laugh out loudly at what you are seeing on the screen. But in reality, you are forcing yourself to laugh at yourself in so many different ways. Which, isn't a bad thing because we humans are supposed to do that too. Laugh at ourselves. A lot of us forget to do that. Movies like, The Sunshine boys, Tootsie, Animal House, Blazing saddles, and many more, can make you do that. And oh so easily......
My advise? Go see a good movie. It will make you feel better about yourself!

i think i has a lot to do with the actors, if they are good at what they do, but also, what all has happened to that character in the movie/in the 'past'. Sometimes I could be because people this it relates to them/some one they know, and as for crying; they can just blame it on the movie. Or maybe people just have a tedency to put themselves in the lead part's shoes, and they get the same emotions as they/the character/situation would get in real life. ET makes my dad cry ....teehee This is kind of the same in books i. e., people sobbed when a dies at the end of harry potter and the 1/2 blood prince.

The ONLY movie that ever made me cry was The Lion King. It was soo sad. Seriously, I still have to leave the room when Mufassa (sp?) gets it. Another one that was really really sad was Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ, I didn't actually cry during that one, but I sure came close. I actually feel bad for not crying, because of what he went through for me.
Other than that I'm not really into the tear jerkers....not my thing.

Alot of movies can relate to a persons problems and feelings, I never really connect to my family so the movie Click (With Adam Sandler) made me cry, because they had parts that had to do with the qualities of family and emotions.

They look for tabooos and then they tease you with them. Example. Schindler's List. "I could have saved more." All you need is a cliff hanger phrase.
