I need to know the original because it was my grandfathers favorite song, he died a few years ago. We'd like to have that song to give to all of the members of the family. If im not mistaken it was sung by Curly Putman. but im not sure if hes even a singer. i dont know all i know is when i searched last that name was always beside it.

Tom Jones in 1966.

Putnam wrote, and recorded it in 1965. Over 600 different artists in every major language have recorded it, so you're going to get a laundry list of answers. Jones' version was the one that made this song popular.

Porter Wagoner recorded the song, "Green, Green, Grass of Home" as indicated by Tree Publishing Co., Inc., copyrighted 1965.

The composer/song writer was Curly Putman.

I had cut out the song from an old Country Hits song book and taped it into a spiral book for my performances years ago. I'm glad I kept it.

The song was written by Curly Putman and Sheb Wooley. You can see the source below for a list of people who've recorded the song. Looks like Johnny Darrell was the first to record it in 1965, then it was covered by a number of other artists. I remember the covers by Tom Jones and Elvis, but none of the others.

Portner Wagoner, Johnny Cash and even Tom Jones sang this song. I don't know if Putman sang it or if he might have been the person who actually wrote it.

Good luck and I think it's nice gesture for you to do this for your grandfather's memory.
