In LeafGreen in Saffron City, once you beat the Fighting Dojo you get your choice of either a Hitmonlee or a Hitmontop. At some point later in the game after you beat Blaine for the Volcanobadge on Cinnabar Island you will have the option to travel to One Island, where you'll meet Celio and earn a Pass that will let you travel to other islands in the game.
Ultimately, on one of those Islands you'll come across a day care where you can leave two Pokemon to breed. Take your Hitmonlee/chan and leave it in the daycare with a Ditto (or other breedable Pokemon of the opposite sex) to make an egg.
Once you have the egg, hatch it and you will receive a Tyrogue. Tyrogue is a Fighting-type Pokemon and is the pre-evolution form of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop. If you raise Tyrogue to level 20 and its attack stat equals its defense stat, it will evolve into Hitmontop. If one stat is greater than the other, Tyroge will instead evolve into either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan, depending on which stat is higher.

At level 20, have it's Defense stats be better than it's Attack stats.

in the old games you get to choose hitmontop or hitmonchamp in the 7 gym right by the other gym next to it see if that helps
