im sorry i know it's wrong to stereotype all people based on a few examples, but when you say "critical thought forum" the only thing that comes to my mind is "pretentious psuedo-intellectual jackass"
now i'm sure they're not all that way, but 99.9% of them are, and that's just a fact, i promise.
odd that individuals in a critical thought forum would be so ignorant to the way they treat newcomers, seeing as how the way you treat outsiders, react to change, and judge those you don't know goes a looong way towards revealing who a person really is

perhaps that forum's purpose is more social than intellectual? and anything social boils down to cliques and one shade of tribalism or another (a sense of belonging begot by exclusion ... a chicken and egg thing perhaps?)
