Well I'm 16 and came out to pretty everyone at school 2 years ago and to my family within the past year. I really can't help you on the parents thing, see me and mine don't really talk that much anymore, after the divorced I moved in with my grandma and now i live around most of my extended family. I never did tell my parents because we really don't talk.

When I figured it out for myself was when I was 17. I told my best friend, right off, as one of the reasons I'd figured it out was that I had a huge crush on them.

I told my mother when I was about 19 or 20, don't quite remember which. Part of why I waited is that I didn't want to be living in the same place with my folks once they found out. My mother told my dad, though I had asked her not to - he didn't speak to me for over a year.

I don't remember when I told my sister, and she has forbidden me to be open around her children under threat that I will not be allowed to see them anymore. I try to respect her wishes in that, even though it means I feel very judged and like I'm walking on eggshells all the time around the kids. The oldest one of her children knows, now, and was told by my sister, when she turned 18. I'm very pleased that this niece wants to get to know me as a person, and is planning a visit to come and see me for the very first time. I've tried really hard to keep an "open door" policy towards these kids - and to help them realize that my sexuality is only a part of who I am as a person, and not my Defining characteristic.

I never told my extended family, as I don't care for them or deal with them much, and I really felt is was none of their business. I think my mother may have told some of them, but I'm not sure who, or why and I really don't care.

It took over 20 years for my folks to grudgingly start to accept my lifepartner [we've been together 23 years] and they still don't entirely approve of it, or understand at all.

I came out to my friends when I learned that my mother had read a letter from my boyfriend, an army man stationed in Germany. I was very distraught about the idea of going home to face the music until my boss admitted she was a lesbian. My mother obviously took care of my coming out to my family.

Forever, once you come out, you just keep coming out. Whether it's a change in employment or a relocation, you will deal with "coming out" for the rest of your life unless you live in a bubble. People, friends, & family will come and go and you will cross paths with many during your lifetime. But each time it becomes easier and when you become more comfortable with it, hopefully they will too.

A little at a time. I was a late bloomer anyway. But my dad knew I was gay before I did. My mom never wanted to talk about anything controversial, so we just left it alone. My sister...she just figured it out in time. Friends, I came out to gay friends first, straight friends later. An inch at a time.

My friends, (most of them) shortly after highschool graduation. Some before that. My parents: halfway through freshman year of college. Needless to say, the people I met in college, it tended to come up relatively early on: wasn't exactly a shock like it may have been to people who knew me longer.
