Every states licensing law is different. In Michigan, you need a permit to purchase, a permit to carry, and need to register your gun.
To purchase a handgun from either a dealer or private individual, the buyer must obtain a license to purchase from the chief of police if the buyer lives in a city, or the county sheriff if he lives in an area without an organized police department. The buyer must be 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Michigan, have no felony conviction, have never been adjudged insane (unless later restored by court order), and score 70% on a basic pistol safety review questionnaire.
The most important thing to do, although not required, is to take a handgun safety course if you are not already proficient.

Good News: You are old enough to purchase a handgun. No need to call the police or anything beforehand, just go to a gun store and start shopping. Also, you live in a "shall issue" state for concealed carry permits which means you don't need to prove you need a permit. They have to issue you one unless you are disqualified.
Bad News: Guns have to be registered with the police in Michigan according to packing.org. The gun store will most likely help you with this when you buy a gun.

In most states, however, you can have a gun in your home. You do not need a permit. You only need to make sure it is registered and in some states you are required to take a handgun safety course, which is probably wise. A permit is only necessary when you want to wear/carry your gun on your person for protection. In some states, the right to carry is easy. In other states, it is non-existant. But in any case, if you want to keep a gun in your home, you do not need a permit. The 2nd Amendment at least guarantees us that much

proving that you do not have a criminal history conviction for felonies after you into Gun shop they will take your drivers license and fill out a federal firearms purchase i think its called form4470 the gun shop owner or rep will call the FBI center in WV where they will do a criminal backround check on you, regardell of where you live in all 50 staes the procedure is all the same for any firearm it can take up to as many as 3 days many times on the spot when approved you get to singn the form and walla you are an armed citizen there is no test or anything like that you will have to be trained in its use if you plan to get acarry conceal permit those are issuded by you local shheriff office if your state had this option for its citizens and can haveone it multiple states in Ohio, Georgia and Florida given the present times i personally think its a wise choice for you to do this always remember with gun ownership come added responsibilities and specially if you have children about the house

Do you have a criminal record? Have you ever been arrested for a violent crime of any sort? Is your drivers license suspended for failure to pay child support?
These things MAY keep you from getting a gun permit.
However, depending on your state, you may not need a permit to buy a certain gun. You will have to register it, but your local gun dealer (read: Pawnbroker) will have the necessary paperwork. Just go in and talk to one, and they should help you out. Curious? go to a gun show. Those guys are real experts and can help you choose a weapon that's right for you. Your local sheriff's department probably offers classes on shooting and gun safety. You may have to complete this course before purchasing a firearm, but this depends on your state law.

You will be able to get a PERMIT if you complete a written test, undergo a phycological examination, and preform a shooting test (to make sure that if you needed to shot a would be assailent, you could with out hurting anyone else) If you got a gun then you have already had a backround check and there is no need to check again for a permit. besides, you can have a permit without owning a gun.

A friend of mine went to a gun store filled out and application and went back in three day to pick up his pistol. The store in Wisconsin is required to submit all your info to the state and it is actually the state that clears a person to purchase a weapon. He said the guy next to him wanted a shotgun. The store faxed the info and fifteen minutes later the guy was walking out with his nice new shotgun. Handguns have a three day wait period, but rifles and shotguns do not.
Depending on your state laws and where you purchase the handgun your situation will vary.
Do take a safety course and always be careful with that weapon. It has no feelings, doesn't care who it shoots.

the link above will have information about concealed carry laws in the state of michigan. But anyone over the age of 21 can purchase a handgun for home safety providing you don't have a criminal record, which you said you didn't. This site has a lot of information.. and I believe you would also be eligable for concealed carry considering that you haven't commited a felony. Good Luck!

unless you are underage or a convict, you should be able to buy and
register a firearm. If you are referring to a concealed permit, you must first have a valid reason for needing one (like having a job that exposes you
to violence) and you can't be a convicted felon and in most states you have to prove that you have been adequately trained.

They normally run a background check prior to your purchase. They will let you know then if your capable of sale. Some states can tell you immediately, while others make you wait up to 5 days. Just depends on your local laws.
