I accidently put my wrong age down. I am 25 years old ,but still even some teenagers I know don't like hip hop videos. And right now I am currently expecting twins. A boy and a girl and I'm not sure if I want them to even listen to that type of music as they grown up.

I used to be really into hip hop and rap, but a few years ago i realized the messages being sent out are horrible for children and even older people. In hip hop and rap they exploit women and the women think its ok and normal. They bad mouth everyone, they use bad language, they speak like idiots, and they make selling drugs and no-strings sex seem like its the only way to live. Raising twins will be hard... especially in this day and age... my advice. Keep them in the best schools you can, limit T.V., enforce education and manners and above all talk to them! dont lie or be shy, Keep honesty and love a prime theme in your household. Music I think is good for children.... jazz, celtic, oldies, kids bob and kids pop... stuff thats mild and fun. Good luck with your twins ^_^

You're right - mainstream rap has gone too far (being only 2 years older than you, I know exactly what you mean). It's gone too far with the misogyny, the profanity and the materialism, which is exactly why I've hardly ever listened to the radio or watched videos for years now. But there are still some good, quality hip hop artists out there, but you definitely won't find them in the mainstream. You should give the non-mainstream artists (like Little Brother or Foreign Exchange, for example) and the underground hip hop circuit a try, and of course there are always the old-school favorites to fall back on.

Most mainstream Hip Hop has gone to far in the violence and in the whole women as objects theory, but a lot of underground hip hop isn't like that at all. You just have to filter through it, like most things it isn't all the same, some are good, some just perpetuates the wrong image.

Look past mainstream into the socially conscious rap, where people like Talib Kweli and Common dwell, into the alternative where crazy MCs like MF Doom live.

Everything except for rap is better than hip hop.

Then have them listen to rock. Or things that aren't as mainstream "gangsta rap", like Outkast, or Common. Opio, who is considered as underground rap, is probably one of the best rappers out there to try to stop the whole guns and violence trend, I wish more people would listen to him...
