Tennis is a great idea because it can be a sport you play your entire life. I've also met a lot of terrific people playing tennis.
If you want to be a professional you're starting too late, however, it seems like you're wanting a sport to play in High School.
Tennis isn't really very expensive, (esp. compared to ice skating). You can get a terrific racket for under $100.00 (and if you're just beginning you don't have to invest that much) You'll probably wear out 1 or 2 pairs of shoes during your tennis season depending of foot style and how you play.
I'd take lessons to learn, but I think I'd take group lessons instead of private... If you want to really improve, take private lessons but for the basics a group lesson probably won't cost much more than $30.00 ( I just went to an "advanced" group taught by a dvision 1A College coach and it was $35 and included a t-shirt)
I took group lessons when I was 10, (1 hr day for 5 days) then played against my brother a lot, by the time I was a Freshman in HS I was varsity, I learned a lot from my HS tennis coach and was offered a scholarship to a small college (half athletic, half academic)
So.. If you're just looking for a fun sport try tennis.
If you're wanting to go pro... it probably ain't gonna happen.

It's not too late to start. You can train a lot and get ready for high school tennis. But tennis is expensive if you really wanna get good at it. Think about it
-Private lessons [$50/hr] or Group lessons [$15/hr]
-Tennis Racquets [$100-200 if you want a good one]
-Tennis Balls
-Tennis Bag
-Tennis Shoes
etc etc etc and you have to find a place to play it.
You don't have to train every single day of your life, but if you want to be the best, then you have to! It's really a fun sport. I'm 15 years old and I have been playing since I was like 7.

I'm gonna say that tennis is too late for you. I'm sorry to say that.
You'll have more chances to become a professional golfer if you start at this age. But with golf, you earn more money than tennis but when you learn it will take more money then tennis.
One private lesson: more then 50 dolars per 45 minutes
One set of golf clubs:cheapest: 900 dollars- more expensive: 3000 dolars.
One round of golf:60 dolars per 18 holes.
To buy a membership in a golf course: 30 000 dolars
To buy accesories ect....
To buy time: a lot of money.
Don't you see Golf is more royal then tennis???
Everyone can swing a tennis swing. But in golf, it's very difficult, 1 of 200 people can have a perfect swing. You'll see then.
You're gonna see that i'm right and that others are wrong when you grow up and don't blame me.

The reasoning behind the prize money differences at tournaments is due to the following: 1. Men play more sets than women, and therefore work harder and longer than the women do. The minimum number of sets a man needs to win to win wimbledon is 21, while a woman can win the tournament in just 14 sets. 2. Tickets to men's matches sell more quickly and in greater volume than for women's matches. Men draw bigger crowds. 3. Television and media coverage of tennis events is still focussed mainly on the men. The men therefore generate more revenue for the media. 4. Men are worth much more to advertisers than women, because they are on our tv more. This makes them a more expensive commodity than the women. I'm sure most of us would agree that women's tennis should get equal coverage in the media and that as athletes they are just as worthy as the men, however you can't really argue with the fact that the men have to play more sets than the women.

Like skating, if you want to be really good at it you have to put a lot of time & effort into it. However, the game can be enjoyed at many different levels. I've been playing for over 40 years (not every day, but at least once a week most of the time). To get to the level I play at has taken some dedication, but not as much as the professionals. Some people play a little less often & aren't as good as I am, but they can still enjoy playing. Don't be discouraged by the amount of effort needed, choose a sport you enjoy playing.

Tennis doesn't take a life time dedication! I didn't start playing till last year and I was 15. So you can start pretty much anytime! Just get the right equipment and you'll be ready to go. From experence its fun and pretty easy to "pick up." Hope you enjoy it!
