I think that it depends on what you think is cute. If you want an easy pet that you can hold on to that is easy to care for, how about a snake. Not for everyone, but like any pet, you can see their beauty if you want to. Also we used to have a sun shine crab(those are easy) , pet rats, salamanders, any kind of lizard, or birds. they don't need shots, and don't eat as much. Growing up I have always had iguana's. They are great companions.!!

Shameless advertising: Would you be interested in mice? Mice make great pets for people of all ages. They can become very tame and social with their human caregivers and are a lot of fun to watch. They also come in all sorts of colours, markings, and fur types- there’s different mice for everyone!
Compared to many pets, mice are also pretty easy to take care of. As long as you have a suitable cage for the number of mice that you have, you only have to clean the cage once a week, which is very easy and not time consuming at all. They are the perfect pet for someone with a busy schedule, but also appreciate any time you can spare. Once tame, they’re also easy to handle. Mice are less lazy and fat than hamsters, but can be less flighty than gerbils once tame.
(I breed mice, lol)
Anyways, if mice aren't the thing for you, I always ask people what they're looking for in a pet (I work at a pet store). I won't include cats, dogs, ferrets, chinchillas, or rabbits in this as all sound harder to take care of or cost more than you are willing to spend. A rabbit you might be okay with, but they are not inexpensive if taken care of properly. If you do chose one, please check your local animal shelter before going to a pet store. There are often many for adoption that are just as nice, and often more friendly, than those at stores.
You cancelled out hamsters and gerbils, which really limit your options. And since you're still reading this, I'm guessing I didn't really sell you on the mice, which also means you likely wouldn't go for rats.
Rats are more social than most small animals (perhaps only beaten by guinea pigs and rabbits, if that) and are less expensive than a larger animal. They make much better pets than most people give them credit for.
Birds and reptiles are often harder to hold, as well as cost more. Finches and parakeets (aka budgies) aren't very expensive, but finches are almost impossible to hold, and from my experience so are parakeets. You can't hold fish.
I really don't know what to suggest. Hamsters, gerbils, mice, and rats are prettymuch the least expensive, easiest to take care of animals, but you don't like at least two of them.
Good luck!

Betta Fish
Northern Walking Stick Insect
Hermit Crab
rodents are not easy to care for so I disagree with anyone who has suggested them
*** Additional Info***
whoops I didnt see "that I can hold" you cannot hold fish... anyhow Guinea Pigs and Rabbits are not that easy I mean they are easy but they require cage cleaning which somepeople dont like - ferrets are even more work than rabbits or GP... maybe you are not ready for pet ownership because the only easy pet is pet rock
