You should always do what you say you will. Even if it's late you can apologize for calling so late, but tell him you just wanted to tell him you loved him before getting to bed. That way you are staying true to your word. And he will know you weren't doing something you shouldn't. Men are pretty strange and quick to jump to conclusions.
