okay my car broke down... I could get it fixed. Its paid for free and clear...but its getting older and I see this becoming a bad pattern of spending money to fix it. My buget is real tight. I cant afford a car payment at this time. or the higher insurance for a new car that is financed.
my grandparents are pretty well off. I have NEVER asked them for money before. I was thinking of asking them to loan me the money to get a good used car that would be more reliable than the one I have now. I know a couple years back they "gave" my brother $10, 000 when he was just "thinking" about buying a house so he would have a good down payment... he spent the money and did not buy the house...
so do I ask them for the money... if so then do I write out a repayment plan or just ask for a gift like they gave my brother... how do I do this with the best hopes of getting at least half what they gave my brother?

I dont feel I am selfish... I am a single mom of 3 kids who works 40-50 hours a week. I have never asked for help before. all my bills are paid. I own my home and my current car. I have car in mind already I would like to get. Its reasonable. its a friends car.. they are military and going overseas.. can on take one of the 2 they own... offered to sell me theirs...
I also know my grandparents have been real quick in the past to give my brother large sums of money...

I drive them shopping and take them to doctors apptments... I see my grandparents 3-4 days a week. my brother and I take turns mowing their grass along with my dad... we have family suppers once a month at my moms... which is a group of 14 people...

If your grandparents are aware of your situation about the car and not able to make a car payment and they haven't offered to loan you the money it may be they were "burned" so bad with your brother that they would not be interested in helping you. How are you going to repay them if you can't afford a car payment? Another used car may be just someone elses headache they traded in. Sometimes fixing up that older car is the cheaper way out. I personally am not comfortable asking for a "gift". Make yourself more available to them, visit more, run errands for them, show an interest. The more involved in your life and aware of your financial situation may get them to offer the money. Remember, they worked hard for their money to just give it away to someone that only comes around when they need help, so don't be that person.

First you need to consider how much time you actually spend with your grandparents.. are you there with them often? Or do you only show up or contact them at holidays? If your answer is you have little contact with them, I would recommend asking for a loan. The might actually give you the money, but at least you won't look like you are trying to sponge off of them and give nothing in return.
If you actually see them as much as you can, go ahead and ask them to help you out. Explain the situation and that you really don't have the money to spare for a new car or a payment. But maybe there might be something else you could do for them in return... Maybe they would like to spend more time with you and your family...
Good Luck.. I hope things work out for you!

Hello,
Either way it goes for you please hold onto your old car for a back up car!
Why not just ask for the money to repair your old car or, sit down with them as you ARE very close and ask for their opinion on the car issue? They might just have a way better idea than yours and then your not misleading them into anything.
Good Luck dear.
Mikey
PS, Buying **ANY** used car is **BUYING** another persons problems!
You need one at least close to new with a manufactures warranty. It will pay for itself over time with good maintenance on your part!
PSS, LOL, sorry!
If you own your home, have you checked into maybe doing a refinance to consolidate all your bills and then you might have enough money coming in to buy that new car yourself! NEW being the key word here....
Bye.

It would be very rude to ask them to give you the money as a gift. You ask them to loan it to you and then if they tell you that you don't have to pay it back, then great.
