An attic fan will work wonders ONLY when the temp. outside is cool enough to intake the cooler air. Otherwise it just sucks in more hot air. During cooler months just open a couple of windows ONLY and turn the attic fan on, to have a cross breeze effect.
For summer cooling help leave the A/C on 80% and use ceiling fans throughout the house. They will circulate the A/C and cost less on the electric bill due to 110 use as apposed to the BTU's being used up by the A/C running 24/7.
Air "circulating" will cool your home. So basically any type of fan will help, oscillating fans works better to distribute air flow.

A 36", 1/2 H.P., belt drive, rated at about 6000 CFM, mounted in the hallway ceiling with a variable speed switch.
When it's on high it'll suck the lint out from under the beds.
You can find them at Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
Unless you are talking about a bathroom exaust fan, then you might want about a 90 CFM, a 50 CFM is a little weak.

the answer attic fan is the correct answer but it is a little more to it than that like how old is your house and do you have ample venting for the draw of air. in the old days that was all we had.it was located in the hallway . you turned it on opened the windows and it would draw air from the outside and let me tell you one thing, about 2:30am to 6:00am you were fighting for covers;nothing like a cool night breeze. kinda off the subject a little, i learned because being flooded by Allison and using a dehumidifier it took less to cool dry air than moist air.

our newspaper said that whole house fans were not a good idea, neither is put a fan blowing air OUT of the house, as it causes an air pressure difference in the house and can cause gas operated appliances (water heaters) to burn improperly and can cause carbon monoxide to fill the house
