It would cut down on theft.

This is not my position. I am just curious how many people here would support this.

We are not barbarians! Good Lord man! You would cut someone's hand off over a pack of Mentos?

I am all for creative sentencing, however, so I would totally support making the shoplifter wear a big sign while standing next to the cashier.

I actually did a debate on this in class and my key point was that by seeing someone with their hand cut off would be a stark reminder of the punishment, effectively reminding potential criminals that it is not worth it. Could you imagine in police drove SUV's and carried M16's? People would fear them. The problem with this issue (other than the constitution) is that our country would no longer be ours, it would be the country of the policeman, of the hand executioner's, and of law enforcement. Why else do you think when we get out of a war we still leave some of our troops behind to "maintain the peace"? It is because we are using fear to control people's actions.

No it would just be adopting an old religious tradition (Sharia) and shoplifting is a crime but not as serious as violent crimes that could occur within a day.
It is something that should definitely be put out of mind and should be given a definite thumbs down as a solution to solve shoplifting or theft.

It's a bit extreme, but it seems to work for the oppresive Muslim countries. Let's compromise. Why not have some Singaporian style discipline and law put on the USA for a generation or two. That might get things straightened out around here.

This is an interesting question. It is the old fear tactic in mitigating crime. Perhaps in bygone ages they had the power to restore someone's hand. Since we cannot restore someone's hand then we would have these disabled people going around with no hand.

Maybe just a finger for the first offence. Yes it would cut down on theft. I also believe a cop should be able to shoot you if you run.

I don't think it would cut down on theft, it would be much harder to make a living w. one hand so you might have to steal even more and might be more likely to become alcoholic and/or incapable of controlling yourself.

No, but they should have to pay the full price of every item stolen and have a 8x10 color photo of them in the very front of the store for all to see!

It's a little too drastic, but not much. Most crime continues to exist because of too much compassion and criminals know there aren't severe consequences.
