String theory is the smallest form of matter now according to quantum physics. Basically imagine a vibrating rubberband. That is what a string looks like. Each rubberband vibrates differently, with each different vibration denoting a different form of matter.
It's revolutionary because it can't be proven by any means, but learning to understand it would unlock all of the secrets of the universe. I watched a show on it on Nova =)
Remember not too long ago it was thought that atoms were the smallest form of matter. Then protons, electrons and neutrons were discovered using particle accelerators. But currently it is impossible to smash apart a proton or electron or neutron to see what is inside, so we always assumed it was energy (heat). But everything, heat included, is made up of these strings.
I hope this info helps. You might be able to find information on this on the PBS website.

steven hawking can tell you about string theory
I can tell you this
its not all that revolutionary, it is just the latest in a long line of theories attempting to unify physics
string theory postulates that instead of all the different primary particles that we have found and are naming (quarks, electrons, etc) that all of them are really manifestations of the same primary element, the "string"
depending on how this string "vibrates", it manifests in a way that we see as acting different and we label it a different primary particle
in order for this vibrating string idea to cover all that we know, it has to be able to vibrate in way more directions that we know about, meaning it has to vibrate towards spatial dimensions besides the three we can perceive (i'm not sure of the number but I think the currently most popular theory requires 9 spatial dimensions)
its a brand new way to look at things and it may eventually prove revolutionary, or it may prove to be a dud as a theory or everything

It is a new idea to try to fill in blanks of a quite obviously complex universal physical reality.
String theory is desperately trying to pull the force of gravity into the unifying force.

The string theory is quite fun actually. It can be tied, notted, stretched, lain flat, twined, etc...
