Im going to assume you mean in todays day and age of sonograms...I had 6 sonograms between 5 and 9 weeks..they only saw one baby..it wasnt until another sonogram that I had at 12 weeks that we were able to see the other baby...and that was only because of the way they moved at the same time...the nurse was the one that caught it....

I found out at 7 weeks. Nowadays, more clinics have portable ultrasound machines, and more multiples are found at earlier stages in the pregnancy. As early as 5 or 6 weeks!
Hence the term Vanishing Twin Syndrome. I read up a lot about it, after we thought that one of my twins had vanished. Thank God, it turned out that they were so close together, we thought we were just looking at one - but it was a mirror image!
Today, if women are finding out that they are pregnant with twins/multiples later on in pregnancy - there are only two reasons why. Either they were not going to get the medical attention that they should have, or some doctor wasn't giving them the medical attention that they should have received.

At Birth. My friends are identical twins and their mom didn't know until the second one was born. Turns out that even though she had an ultrasound, it was a very early one, and they were mirror twins, so one was behind the other and couldn't be seen on the ultrasound.

My Grandmother had a set of twins (#6 and #7)... then not long after they were born she got pregnant again. She was convinced that she was pregnant with twins (#8 and #9), but the doctors kept telling her that there was definatley only one baby in there. She gave birth - and guess wat? She had twins!!
This was a long time ago - so equipment etc wasnt as good as it is now.
She then had my mum (#10!!) couple of years after that!
PS - they were both fraternal sets
