a blown head gasket will do this on a vehicle,,it does it as soon as you start it too,,as for the thermostat it usually takes a few minutes for it to do it,,but a blown head gasket pumps pressure in to the coolant chamber,,and it has to come out somewhere,,and that somewhere is the tank,,i have seen them blow a hose apart,,and you can be burned by this,,and believe me it don't feel good,,you will also notice a slight change in the way the car runs also with a blown head gasket,,just make sure you have checked the radiator really good,,because when they get stopped up,,they will cause a similar problem,,but they usually run for a few minutes before they show up,,i hope this helps,,i do it for a living.

all above are possible, but there is one more thing.Ive seen weak radiator caps allow the pressure to go into resevoir too soon.Take your cap and get it tested,I think most start to allow antifreeze into reserve at abot 13 psi. Also if cap is bad it will not create a vacumn in the system to pull antifreeze back into radiator when it cools down.
Try to be more specific with question. Is it running hot, what is year and model of car.We can help better that way.

Sounds like a blown head gasket. This happened to me, and there isn't exactly much you can do to fix it for cheap. Does it make sort of a boiling noise, like a pot on a stove? Thats what mine did right before it died 100%. I'd say about 900 bucks can fix it though, or says my mechanic.

it only comes out for one reason, you have a leak. You need to find out where the leak is and fix it. If the coolant gets low you will burn up the engine. trust me cheaper to fix the leak then the exgine

Sounds like your radiator is clogged up somewhere...when the fluid superheats then it comes out through the path of least resistance.
If the radiator is clogged up ..it can't run through so it backs up.
