I am traveling to San Francisco for a few days and have always been fascinated with bike messengers/couriers. I want to know the best place to see them in action. Any help would be a start.

Good for you. San Francisco bike messengers rock! I am a frequent user of bike messenger services and a huge fan! Any time there is some problem slowing down business in San Francisco, like when all the demonstrators tried to shut down the city when the war in Iraq started, our wonderful gonzo bike messengers get the work through on time and keep us alive.

I know a large group of them hang out at the corner of Sansome and Market street in the FiDi between trips, near the flower stand on the Sansome Street side. Just stop by on any business day and they will be there. You will NOT usually find them in tourist areas like Fisherman's Wharf.

I see many on Embarcadero every day. It's a nice walk by the bay and you'll see plenty of bike messengers. It's also near Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf which are definately "must-visit" places, at least for tourists. But there's definately an abundance of bike messengers in that area.

Anywhere in the Financial District, especially along Market Street.

Cool, I was there the other day. I would ask a person on a bike or other locals in a neighborhood you are interested in. I would also make sure my bike was a comfort bike so your butt don't hurt from all those hills :)
