I am getting ready to get an IUD and according to my doctor you should be able to concieve right away once its removed. If you have been trying for a year I would go to the doctor and get some tests done to make sure your ovulating, tubes aren't blocked etc..

see a doctor if you are still having a problem in another 6 or 7 months. Those can affect you up to 18 months.

Depending on your age, if you have not succeeded in a year you may want to see a fertility specialist - just to make sure everything is all right.
