My desk is narrow, and I was copying a passage from a book when the book slipped. I reached out to push the monitor back a few inches and hit one of the buttons under the screen, and now my contrast is all screwed up. I went back and hit all of them again, but nothing changed. My screen is all "washed out," both the typefaces and the background. What do the buttons on the bottom do, and how does one operate them?

Hi. It depends on the monitor. Look for a button that looks like a half moon. This is the contrast button. Push it and adjust the settings. If this does not work try the other buttons. Sounds like one got pushed by accident.
