An S.O.S. Transmission was an early distress signal sent from ships in trouble. The original acronym stood for Save Our Ship...It now has been reduced to a signal of distress. Regardless of on a ship or not!

SOS sometimes means save our ship, some one special, save our souls, etc.

SOS is not an acronymn for anything. It was used as the Morse Code distress signal because it had an easily recognizable pattern.
