Extremely irresponsible and inhumane. The prisoner made a mistake in their life that got them there yes but that does not mean that their lives are worthless. I do wish that prisons would focus more on rebuilding the prisoners and preparing them to return to society. It's so sad.

If they could not provide AC they still had an obligation to make the living quarters adequate for a safe and healthy environment for the inmate. There should have been some sort of ventilation so that clean air could freely circulate even if it was not climate controlled.
Now as far as all of the "luxuries" that prisioners have, I do not mind one bit. As long as all of the bad people stay away from the rest of us who are making a living and taking care of our families I am all for prisioners having plasma TV's and 3 meals and recreation, and anything else that makes them happy. As long as they do not have an incentive to break out its worth my tax dollars.
I think about what they did prior to AC being invented. I have been down south where apartment buildings constructed prior to the 1960's were not equipped with AC however they were still reasonably comfortable. The buildings were constructed and positioned in such a way that you could open the door to your apartment and then open your windows and you would get a cross-breeze through the hallway which was strategically built to catch the other side of the wind. All of the apartments had outer louvered doors so that the tenant could open his door and still maintain some degree of privacy.
Having said all of that, if the building was not designed to have ventilation other than the A/C then they had an obligation to make sure that it was working.

Prisoners die all the time from so many other important issues and these are not addressed properly. Tack on one more little annoyance. Actually, it's better to create a prison system no one in their right mind would want to go to. Let's create a human rights prison so the prisoners are comfortable. It would be acceptable if criminals would synchronize with the civil world. Ask the victims of the criminals, why not?

It's more cruel that the elderly don't have A/C and don't financial assistance to keep their A/C running, and they die as a result of heat exhaustion in their own homes. There are many deaths this year due to the heat wave and lack of A/C. Statistically, a certain percentage of people will die in a heat wave. I would put your energy into helping the poor pay for A/C, rather than demanding that criminals be kept cool.

There are a lot of people responding to this question who don't Constitutional rights. Yes, if they are in prison, they probably did something wrong. The fact that thousands are wrongly convicted every year aside, breaking the law doesn't mean you deserve to die or be treated as anything less than a human. I doubt all those who answered can say they have never done anything in their life that could have put them behind bars, or have had a friend or family member who had to serve time that they thought deserved to die.

They COMMITTED a Crime. What exactly is it you want for them? They get three meals a day Free Health care. ect ect. Now you wanna give them AC. Hell let's give them all Flat Screen Plasmas they shouldn't be forced to watch just a dam regular TV. Lets get them Plush carpeting as well for there cells and maybe Silk Jami's instead of that dam Prison garb. Hell In fact Lets just let them out WHY SHOULD THEY BE FORCED TO BE IN PRISON thats just CRUEL.
People like you are either really STUPID or you simply Love kissing Criminal ***. WHY don't you WORRY a little more about the Elderly that don't have AC's

Depends on the situation. Most prisons have specific guidelines they have to follow. Most likely, they have a/c but it's set at a specific temperature all the time... the hotter it gets outside, the hotter it will get outside. I work for a prison.. so I know how our system is. It's hot all the time. I highly doubt there was absolutely no A/C... but yeah i think there should be an investigation.

You've got you priorities wrong. You're worried about two prisoners and not the dozens of normal people that have died because of the heat this summer. Maybe you should exam your concerns.

Well, I know plenty of people who go to work every day and don't commit crimes and still can't afford air conditioning. I think it is a luxury not a necessity. We need to worry about the wellbeing of those not in prison, too.
