Before you'all stab me with words, I first would like to tell you that I am also Asian. I have worked in retail for a long time and when Asian people come in, they don't spend as much as others. They don't buy anything extra even that knowing that a PS2 without a memroy doesn't allow you to save games. Their spending habits isn't as wreckless as other races. And why do Indians always ask for a discount (please disregard if you're the more Americanized Indian.)

I would rebut that most people are cheap, unless they happen to be rich.

I'm also Asian, and I feel that my folks are stingy, in general, but I feel like it's a personal lifestyle choice. It's always relative to who you know.

Cheap Asian

Long answer: I was born in Manhattan with American friends but did not fully become "Americanized" until high school. My parents did exactly the same thing, taking ketchup, forks, waiting in line at customer service for 30 minutes if they were overcharged $1. Now that I'm middle aged and making decent money, I've gotten less and less cheap. (and by cheap, I mean on myself and family. We still give 10% to our church and donate to other causes.) My sister on the other hand has remained dirt cheap, once driving back to Walmart (15 min away) and waiting in line for 20 min to get a price correction of $2. So cheapness IS endemic in asian cultures. However, it can be overcome by 1) Americanization 2) earning more money. There are also varying sorts of cheapness. The worst is when you splurge on yourself and are offensively cheap on others. I'm the "good" kind where I'm cheap on myself but spend freely on friends and family. I suppose when money is hard to come by when you're young, you become a spendthrift.

Living within your means and being cheap are not the same. I have several single Asian friends who make well over $100K with no debt and always "forget" their wallet, don't want something until after you've gotten it and expect you to share, or find one of a dozen other ways to keep their money so they don't have to part with a dime. I have other Asian friends like me, who live within their means and spend money on quality. There is a huge difference!

I'm Asian as well.

My mom was extremely poor growing up, so she likes to conserve money, that's all.
She and her siblings put empty bags and cans in the cupboards to pretend they had food. She thinks before she buys to make sure she's getting the best deal. When she doesn't spend, it's because money saved was wiser than money spent. I agree that some Asians can be very thrifty, but I don't think it's out of meanness. My dad is also Asian, and he is always willing to spend more money for quality.

And my mom's not that tightfisted, she gave me and my older sister a shopping spree! :D Thanks mom!

A lot of the older generations had war torn history, and because of that they are used to being cheap and getting small amount of things and living with it. the newer generation from asian countries probably have that attitude rubbed off on them from their parents.

And indian people live in extended families together. because of that they need to spend a lot of money on the big house they need, food, and clothes, so they are just trying to spend as less money possilble no matter the method.

^^ just be understanding to the people's background when you ever become frustrated with them sometimes.

i am part asian as well.

i think most asian's are cheap, because of their upbringing. this is pertaining to the country they or their ancestors came from. countries like the philippines and vietnam are two for example. there is a lot of poverty in those countries and if people come to america from those countries... i think they grasp the concept of what it means to "work hard for money". apparently, most of them seem cheap by conserving and only buying what they need, rather than spending all their money at one time. they realize it's an opportunity to financial freedom in the long run. i guess it's a good thing though, look at how many of them prosper and have lots of money.

It's not being cheap, but more money management. If you blow your wad at any given time, you will never be successful. A good analogy is a boat with a hole on the bottom. If you are a person with a boat that has a hole on the bottom, eventually you will sink. If you let your money just flow out of your pockets, you will always be in debt. Stay afloat...

Hey, I am asian, I'm not cheap. Why are you stereotyping all of us ?

Stereotyping? Because you are cheap...and that wouldn't be worth mentioning of you weren't mean and dishonest on top of being cheap.
