Remember that everytime you install a program on your computer it puts certain files in the startup system there for the more programs you have installed on the computer the longer it will take to start up. Also you should unistall any programs you do not need. Do a disk cleanup under system tools. Then run the defrag program. ALso if you have antivirus software installed that will hog alot of the processor speed in the start up and sometimes during normal operation.
Regards.

Disk defrag will only straighten up the files for faster search time. By no means will that speed up the computer. It could be a virus or just to dam much down loads or maybe the boy friend is porn sight watching... One way or the other I would agree that a re-install would be good for some one that doesn't know anything about computers. I don't use xp any more I use xandros Linux . However I would use windows washer- along with Bit def fender and start taking out some down loads like games.

That is like asking 'I've got a headache. What's its source?'. There are hundreds of possibilities, each with its individual solution. People would suggest you to format your hard drive(s) but it could be like burning the whole house down to kill an ant; so obviously you need to analyze what the problem is. There are a few steps I can tell you to follow:

1) No matter how old it is - use Scandisk and Defrag your drives.

2) Run a virus check on your comp if you have anti-virus software installed. If not, try Microsoft Anti-Spyware or AdAware.

3) Your Autorun list could be stacked with more than your RAM can take. Remove the startup of some items that you don't really need, like 3rd party Firewall, SysTray modifiers etc.

4) Free more space in your hard drive(s) (especially on the one where you got your OS is installed.

5) (although I highly doubt it) Your computer parts could be damaged due to exposure to too much heat. Have someone check on them if you suspect such a thing is possible.

If you take these steps your computer will be back to normal 90%. Just give it a try, you've got nothing to lose.

there are several reasons and solutions to this problem.
1)this could be a sign of your hard drive beginning to fail. Hard drive manufacturers have software you can download to diagnose hdd problems

2)if the hard drive is fine, then just backup your stuff and reinstall windows

3) run virus scans to see if all you have is a virus
some good free ones are:
AVG antivirus
avast antivirus, take your pick between the two

Spybot Search and Destroy
Ad-Aware
Windows Defender
Hijack-This

Good Luck!!

There could be many problems, but I would have to say the main thing is cleaning your registry. The registry is the computer's brain and when it becomes to overloaded it greatly slows the speed at which your computer can process at.

you should ask computer related questions on www.cybertechhelp.com.

i had that problem too and you could download CCleaner at:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/

i have that and it's good at cleaning unneeded things on your computer.

i would also try doing Disk Cleanup:
-click Start
-click All Programs
-click Accessories
-click System Tools
-click Disk Cleanup

then when your done with that, click the More Options tab and then under System Restore click Clean Up

if you still have problems, i strongly recommend signing up (its free) at cybertechhelp.com and then ask them

Do a disk cleanup and a defrag right after. Defrag takes awhile but it crunches your files and gives you more memory and pretty much cleans out your system.

First you need to do a scan and then defrag your machine. Hopefully you have an anti-virus program as viruses can also slow down your machine. Good luck!
