somewhere, the flank isn't making contact so either way i pull the damn thing, the water doesn't run.
on top of that, it seems like the thing is stuck cause i can't pull it out!

some are connected with a chain ,others are connected by a rod and a clip or clamp, sounds like yours just loosened are disconnected,if you can get at it from the back or underneath just hook it back up and tighten it,my bathroom sink did the same thing, the stopper would not come out so i went under the sink and tapped on the bottom of it and it popped up then i noticed the clamp on the rod was loose and i tightened that up now it works perfect.check it when you are done because they have to be adjusted right so it opens and closes enough to drain and stop the water.

If you have two screws on your overflow ,remove it to see if it is adjustable. A plastic gromet may be needed
