Like people pointed out, smoking during pregnancy is realy bad for the baby. I won't repeat.

However, 120 sigarettes per day does sound like an exagerration. 120 divided by 12 hours of waking time (eating time subtracted, too) is 10 sigarettes per hour, which means she light up a new one every 6 minutes. I'm not a smoker, but I've seen people smoke. 6 minutes per sigaterre is like smoking in a hurry.

In any case, convince her to cut down. It is your baby too, not just hers. So demanding to cut it by half doesn't seem unfair.

Mother's who smoke put their babies at risk for low birth weight, premature birth, asthma, RSV, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Even if the baby is born ok, which I doubt the child is at risk for repeated ear infections which can cause deafness and speech issues, respiratory problems and having a smoker in the home increases the chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by 50% (the baby goes to sleep and never wakes up). The child could also develop asthma and other serious lung diseases.

I hate to be mean and judgmental, but what your wife is doing is child abuse. Have you ever seen the commercial where there is a person in a chamber that fills with smoke and the person can't get out? That's what happens to your baby every time she lights up.

I would be seriously concerned about what kind of mother she is going to be if she is willing to cause her child to be exposed to a cancer causing agent.

However, approaching her that way will not help her to quit. Has her Dr. spoken to her. Help her get this information from a neutral source. I don't think it will help. She is an addict and addicts seldom see beyond their addiction.

Side note: My aunt smoked like a chimney and died at 54 of brain and lung cancer.

Low birthweight and premature birth are the highest reported compication for smoking mothers. This can lead to a lot of health problems for the newborn including RSV which can be deadly. To help her quit or at least cut back on smoking designate that the only room in the house she is allowed to smoke in is the bathroom. Replace all used ashtrays with new ones and place a large supply of cinnamon sticks near them. She can suck on the cinnamon sticks instead of a cig. If this doesn't help than talk to her doctor because she will seriously harm the baby.

Holy Cow! That much nicotine in the body, the baby will be born adicted to nicotine! Many sleepless nights for you my friend until teh baby gets over it's adiction. It will go through withdrawls...which will complicate any other health problems it will probably have. Also smoking mothers of newborns has been shown to cause severe asthma in infants, which will also kill them or keep tehm very sick their entire life. 120 cigs a day is way more than most normal people smoke....think of the money you'd save if she cut back to just two packs a day??? WOW, you gotta get her to quit, and soon!

the baby will either be :
1- deformed
2- born with serious health problems like in breathing or being very underweight
3- die !!!
4- born premature n have lots of problems
the mother will have a very serious disease and die eventually...

this may seem harsh but it's the truth, n u really should do sth .. u don't want to lose any of them

i knw s1 who's mother was a very heavy smoker,,,, the mother kept smoking during her pregnancy, and so the baby was born after 25 weeks , it had a very serious problem,,, unfortunately it died... this is really sad..

WAKE UR WIFE UP

She is killing her lungs and hurting the baby A LOT!

Smoking nearly doubles a woman’s risk of having a low-birthweight baby.
Smoking has been associated with a number of pregnancy complications. Smoking cigarettes appears to double a woman’s risk of developing placental problems.
A recent study suggests that babies of mothers who smoke during pregnancy may undergo withdrawal-like symptoms similar to those seen in babies of mothers who use some illicit drugs.

That's not good for the child. The child may be born unhealthy, or with birth defects. Does she really smoke THAT much cigarettes daily? That's not good, she can die from lung cancer!

The baby may be very (almost deadly) premature.
If the baby survives, it will have a host of health problems.
Your wife may die very young and leave your child behind.
Sorry to be blunt, but there is no sugar coating that. She needs to stop NOW!! She is being very selfish to that baby. She isn't even giving it a chance!
