I would like to take in my blue jeans about a size or too. Im very petite and none of my jeans are small enough and the stores dont have my size. Id have to get costome made jeans but it would be much easier/cheaper if i could do it myself. Especially considering i have a sewing machine, plenty of time and i love to sew. Ive been sewing since i was 14 but ive never attempted a project like this so even some helpful tips would be nice.

Well, it seems like alot of people have said wash them in hot water, but that won't make them a size or two smaller, it will just make them a little bit smaller. Since you know how to sew aleady, you should just be able to undo the stitching and bring it in an inch or two. Take some measurements of your self so you know exactly where you need to bring in the excess and resew them. If that works well for you, you might even try making your own pair by using the pattern or shape of another pair. You would have custom jeans for cheaper than you can buy regular no name jeans.

You didn't mention just what size you really are. If you just want to bring them down a size, and they aren't already pre-shrunk, then you can boil them on top of the stove for about 10 minutes, then let them sit in the water until it cools. After that, put them in a very hot dryer.
If however, you need even smaller jeans, possibly you haven't found the correct store. If you are petite, then find a store that sells petite. If you wear a size 1 or smaller, then try the childrens section. A size 3 is basically a girls size 14 but with a tiny bit more room in the hip. A size 1 would be the equivalent of a 12.
If you prefer really snug, form fitting jeans, then perhaps you might consider checking out the Victoria's Secret Catalog. Their pants run pretty small.
If you are really intent on sewing, then take apart a pair that you like that are too big, cut them carefully around the outside seams as well as the inseam, and butt. In order to get the right seam again, you will need an over-lock machine. In fact, start with your least favorite pair, just in case you screw them up. If you pull it off, then go for the pair you like.
Good luck to you on your endeavor.

There's an issue of "Threads" magazine I have that features how to make the perfect pair of jeans by Sandra Betzina. If you can find it in the local library, it's issue number 111 from March 2004. I have the same problem lately because I lost some weight and am too broke to buy more clothes.

I've also seen some pants at Anthropologie that have some little belt styled attachments at the waist band towards the back that allow you pull the waistband in an inch or so on either side. I thought this was very clever, because if you ever gain that inch back, the pants will still fit. You could probably think of something similar to it.

I tried to find them online, but they don't seem to have good pictures of details like that even if I could remember which ones they were.

I agree that denim is difficult to sew, but it's that much more rewarding when you figure out how to do it. Make sure you have the proper needles, and read the tips on how to sew through the extra thick parts. Grommets are also kinda fun!

My sister has the same problem because she's 5' and a size 0 and 00. She also has a sewing machine. She takes in the seams from the inside and crotch area and sews in it and cuts off the excess fabric. Just make sure you try the jeans on and like the cut and are comfortable in them before you start to stitch them up and cut them. You can pick up a needle that is just for sewing demin and there are threads that are just for demin also..they come in various shades of brown. Yes, you should try it because I used to be a size 00 and every pair of jeans and pants were always too big. This way, you could tailor to your body perfectly.

wash in hot water and dry on a ot setting. There are patterns for jeans. CK has a pretty good all around pattern for jeans that you can adjust or alter as you like.

My daughter has a similar problem. One solution is to buy the size that fits your hips and waist and hem the legs to the proper length! That's the simplest tailoring job. Taking in jeans at the waist is more of a project because of the fabric thickness and the nature of those seams.
